The myth that Nader cost Gore the 2000 presidential election was used
successfully to pressure the Green Party's leadership not to run Nader
again in 2004. The Green Party caved to this pressure in late 2003/2004 and
rejected Nader's offer to run again - imo Nader rallying antiwar sentiment
and building on the success of the 2000 campaign would have fostered a
serious growing challenge to the capitalist's two-party political system.
Instead the Greens ran a nationally unknown token candidate David Cobb,
initiallly contemplating a "safe-states" strategy on behalf of John Kerry
it turned out that the Cobb campaign was too insignificant to matter. The
'Nader cost Gore the 2000 presidential election' myth is now central to the
arsenal of capitalist system 'lies our teachers and the mainstream media
teach us' (like 'Israel is a democratic state').

The reality is that half of Florida's registered Democrats didn't bother to
vote in 2000 and 12% of them - over 200,000 - voted for Bush. In addition
to Nader/Greens, each of the other seven third party presidential
candidates on the Florida ballot in 2000 got more than the 543 votes that
supposedly made the difference, see <
http://www.cagreens.org/alameda/city/0803myth/myth.html>. Along with the
effect of voter suppression and related Republican dirty tricks, Gore
didn't even put up a fight for a full Florida recount. Later recounts
indicated that Gore had actually won the Florida election.
