It was actually through another organization who were a Mimecast customer. They hammered away at the standard support channels, until eventually it was escalated appropriately.
When I said "workaround", this was actually a euphemism for them stopping using Mimecast's services - not because of this specific reason, but it did so happen to fix it ;-)
So if that is the reason, the best option would be to ask the recipient in question to open a ticket. I might even be able to dig out our reference number if that would be helpful.
