I tried to use Android for a while, but gave up in despair. Google's App
Store was full of garbage, including a bunch of out-and-out malware, and
while Android wasn't bad, the Samsung phones I got were filled with
horrible crapware: first Samsung would put on their crapware, and then
my cell phone company put there's on on top. And none of it could be
removed.
Having Apple refuse to let my phone carrier dump garbage all over my
phone was great! US carriers turn Apple's walled garden from a bug into
a feature!
I wouldn't mind if there was a midpoint between Apple's excessive
control and Google's complete lack of interest, but given the choice, I
had to go for the former...
Duopolies aren't great for users.

I'm not convinced that it is even feasible to make a great MUA for a
phone. If you start with the same design goals as a great macOS MUA,
you end up with a MUA like Preside, which is highly capable but too
complicated for the tiny screen.
I'm with Bill on this but I'm also slightly flummoxed by so many IOS
users: I-Phones are so restrictive that I've never wanted one. OTOH,
users seem really happy with annual fees enforced through breaking
compatibility, so what do I know? ;-)
On Android, I've used K9 in the past but switched to FairEmail a few
years ago, while K9 was in the doldrums. I don't do a great deal of
processing on the phone, so can't comment on feature set but FairEmail
has a similar development release to MailMate so I was happy to pay
for it. K9 is open source so a port to IOS might be possible, if
you're allowed to use the relevant components. Hm, looks like K9 has
been folded into Thunderbird and an IOS client is planned for this
year.
