I use Preside, but agree it may not be for everyone.  It's IMAP support is 
excellent, and as I make huge use of Tags, it's been great for many of my 
personal use cases.

However, I also roll my own solution and use Roundcube (with a responsive skin) 
and a few plugins to support IMAP tags/keywords, etc.

Whilst this is not a true on-device client, by having a dedicated Roundcube 
webmail instance only accessible via a personal VPN and using MFA, which talks 
to my private IMAP server sitting next to it, I find that I can get a fair bit 
done.

Now, if only Keyboard Maestro could work on an iPad or iPhone....
