Just like Siju said, for people who're so free to the FOSS world and want to
know what BSDs are, here's a minor intro to FreeBSD:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/library/os-freebsd/

Meanwhile, Siju can elaborate on the following point in the above article:

>> The more well-known journaling file systems current on Linux, like Reiser
>> File
>>System (Reiser FS) and Journaling File System (JFS), are not available on
>>FreeBSD, mostly for security reasons.

Like I said, ancestry is irrelevant. Anybody differing with me can tell me why.

iOS/RIM OS etc never had such a 40+ yr ancestry but people are going gaga over
its functionality. Anyway, enlighten me otherwise.

I agree with you regarding how Intel sucks. I spent months trying to acquire a
discarded Mac G5 dual-PPC machine. The effort never paid!

But I should respectfully disagree with you about supporting exotic platforms,
which is a waste of manpower, and could be concluded as nothing less than a
hobby and time-pass.

Distros like Debian taking out support for outdated hardware like vanilla 386
chips is a good example.

Would anyone care if a huge improvement was made to Linux/BSD running on
System/370? Hardly.

Improvements should and must be made to systems that people are actually
running, and would benefit maximum people.

Loongson system seem to be very attractive. Had read a lot of articles written
by Knuth about advantages of MIPS (he being a co-founder of the architecture?).
Too sad, its not catching up in India.

VAX? rofl!

How can the number of platforms can be directly proportional to the quality of
the operating system/kernel?

Keep that smile :)

But yes, there IS an issue with writing a GPL-driver after signing NDA.

Reading more about it.

I still don't get why BSDs are whining when Linux get a GPL'd driver (at
whatever cost) which they couldn't achieve in their so called 40-years+ of
"ancestry"??

Whatever links you post are from a pro-BSD or BSD sites. People post
differentiated opinions elsewhere. Pro-Linux/Pro-GNU sites are bashing BSDs.
Half-empty-half-full glass? Caveat User!

Agreed with you 200%
