I was going to write this up earlier but you've saved me time lol.

VGA terminators are not exactly common place in the UK so is more specialist 
than consumer.

that's the thing about graphics cards. people often think that a graphic card 
is output only. nope. it's both. as you rightly say, there are 2 control points 
from the GPU which sense a display. this includes display resolution and in 
certain cases manufacturer and identifier points.
