You can use imap from as many devices as you want and they will all stay in sync. If you use pop you are downloading your messages to each device and you may or may not be deleting them on the server dependent on the way each mail client is configured. As for the certificate issue read the details of the certificate and see if the certificate is valid. It may be a certificate for the wrong domain or it may have expired.
