sarah,
many, many users here and else where who are VI have set up their IPhones. It 
is really easy. Chances are the connector may not have been correctly attached 
or there may have been other things going on. The truth is, most of us who have 
the IPhone have gone through all of this with little assistance. Apple 
registered my simcard in store but I set it up through my own itunes, switched 
on VO and everything like that. And once I get the IPad I will do the same 
thing. No need to be nervous, few people have had the issue you speak of as far 
as I'm aware.
