Hi Jean,
Years ago I started using Carbon Copy Cloner. At the time it was free.
Then it moved to a payed model. I’ve been using it ever sense. It is
accessible. It makes a bootable copy on a external drive.
I have only once had to use it to completely restore my hard drive, but
it worked and was well worth having it.
It can also be used to retrieve files from past backups.
I just mention it as I’ve had good luck with it. But, I have not investigated
other options in many years.
