Hi, When this happened on iMacs, it was usually due to a non-Apple HD being installed after an HD failure. The non-Apple HD didn't interface properly with the sensors, and thus it turned the fans on just for fun. I don't recommend doing that in this situation as it is not a mis-reading of sensors kind of thing. If you turn down the fans and the machine is getting hot, you could cause damage to the internal components.
