Jonathan,
I can’t remember off the top of my head but is there even an option to
open a folder in a new window / tab within finder?
I’m using my windows machine right now so can’t at this time check this.

I still do not understand how you got several windows open. I know your
problem is resolved, but this might be a useful command for me on
occasion. So for the third time, can you please tell me what command you
used that opened a folder in a new window!
Thanks,
Jonathan Cohn

oh ok. I guess I didn't make the distinction because I was having
folders open in new windows. then when I cycled through them to get
to the one that I wanted to copy something to all those that I had
opened on my way somewhere would be open. yes they were folders but
they were windows too.

In your original post you mentioned closing windows using
command up and down. Therein lies the confusion that flummoxed
several people.
Command up and down opens and closes "folders", not "windows".
You can also use right or left arrow to open and close folders
when in list view.
Option up and down goes to bottom or top of a list.
There is no Command Option up and down. Hopefully we are on
the same page.

Yeah sure this isn't anything unusual.
The command option up / down arrows allows you to go

I use the option command up all the time to go back a

But like what was said, I'm not sure where this command
comes in to relationship with copy and pasting
Unless you mean once you have the files selected and
you've hit command c
That you then use command option up / down to go to the
location you wish to paste the files into

Subject: Re: cycling through windows in finder
it's kind of hard to explain. when I want to cycle
through windows I use command-tilde. when I want to open
folders as I'm navigating to my desired destination,
that's when I use command-option-down arrow for open and
command-option-uparrow for close. I'm in list mode. I'll
have one window already open in say, downloads. then
I'll cycle to another window say in my external hard
drive. once I'm in there I need to navigate to the
folder where I'm going to copy or paste a file from
downloads. sometimes I have to go 2 or 3 deep to get to
the desired folder. then as I would cycle back through
the windows heading for downloads, I would hit every
window I had to open to get to the desired folder. I
wanted to find a way of reducing the number of windows I
had to cycle through. if I remember to use
command-option-down arrow as I'm navigating, that seems
to do the trick.

Hello Lorie and thank you for this info.
However, I am not certain that I understand the
scenario to which you are referring.
For example, when I need to copy and paste files
between finder windows, I use Command+~.
I don't think I've ever used Command+UpArrow.
Can you please describe why and how this scenario
plays out in a sequence of steps?
Thank you,
Mark

I figured out something I want to tell you all about
in case anybody's interested. I had been asking
about how to have most or all of the windows closed
except for the 2 that I wanted to copy and paste
between. I used to be able to do this but now all
the windows I was navigating through to get to my
destination had become part of the cycle. somebody
here mentioned opening and closing windows using
command-down and up arrows. I had been doing this
without the option and including it in the command
has cleared up the problem for me. it kind of closes
the door or window behind me.
