I think maybe I just explained it. I don't actually ever open any new windows.
at any given time at least on my Mac there are at least 3 windows open. 1 is in
my home directory probably for the sake of this discussion in Downloads.
another one is usually open in my external hard drive at the root where all the
folders can be viewed. and a third will be closer to the root where the 2
drives are maybe desktop. say that I want to move a file I've just downloaded
into my external hard drive. I will copy the file in downloads and cycle around
to my external hard drive. then I'll have to go in several levels to the folder
I want. then I can copy or paste. I may have to go back to downloads or to
another place in my home directory to find something which needs to be added to
this folder in my external hard drive. the problem I was talking about was that
all the windows are open for the folders I have passed through when I was
navigating to this place in my external hard drive. I wanted to have them close
behind me so to speak, not be present in the cycle even though I've had to pass
through them to get to this place in my external hard drive. this has been
happening as I want it to if I remember to use option in the keyboard command
to open the folders. I don't open new windows because I don't understand how to
use them.

another thing that sometimes happens is that I need to windows in the same
drive. that's when I grab the one that's always open in desktop and navigate to
where I want to be. even if I closed it when I was finished with it, all the
places I had passed through would still be in the cycle when I was done. it got
messy. I should mention that even if I start in that desktop window, use it to
navigate and then close it when I'm finished, it's always there in the cycle
which is fine with me. I just don't want all these folders open that I have
navigated through.
