Word does actually have an equation editor in it that can be used.
It may not be there by default, but you can add it into the install if need
be.
Check the menus for the equation editor and see how that goes.

I don't understand.  Why can't you just type something like 4x=20 into a
word document?  That is, unless this isn't what you mean by an equation.
