Hi Alex, Yes the first entry is the actual drive, you would partition this, the second entry is the drive volume so if you only wish to format the volume then highlight the second entry and then go to the eraise tab and then select the correct format mac osx extended journaled, then eraise, you can also give the volume a name so you know which one it is.
The drive name is a weird layout but will have the manufacturers name, such as apple or Toshiba and the drive size 1tb etc, this is the full drive and as I said above this is what you would select if you wish to partition the drive.hope that helps. Hey list, Something I've wondered for a long time but never bothered to check out is this. When reformatting a drive in OS X--sorry, macOS--Disk Utility shows me a table of disks. Most have two entries, one for the physical device and one for each volume on that device, I presume. I'm not even sure if that's correct. When reformatting, which do I choose? My mother has a 1TB NTFS drive that she wants me to reformat for use on a Mac. I've backed it up, and know to use the right file system and all that. What I'm wondering is which entry in the disks table to choose.
