Hi, You are right with respect to the first item in the list. With respect to your question about only formatting the volume, I'm not totally sure as I've never tried it. You are able to have both Mac and Windows based partitions on one physical disk, but I've never tried it with the initial partition map being NTFS. If it did work, you would not be able to boot from that disk, nor be able to use it for Time Machine, but likely for data.
