Scott,

Thank you. If I understand what you’re saying, basically, Apple TV does not
replace our TV provider, it does however, offer internet free programs &
subscription programming like netflicks, H B O & so on. Its simply putting
internet content on the TV for viewing. So if I wanted to watch something on
say TCM, or TBS or Halmark they would not be available through Apple TV since
they are not internet broadcasts – am I correct??

I am thinking that if we are happy with the current TV line-up and wanted to be
able to continue watching/listening to certain tv stations, then we would have
to keep the Verizon portion of our triple bundle in place.

We’d have Apple accessibility when using the device or looking for internet
/subscription programs, but it will not alter anything on our Verizon Fios
settings we have. I could not say to it “go to TBS” or any other queries
regarding the programs that are not on the internet or subscription portion of
what Apple TV pulls in.

Hmm, given the fact that we have accessible computers in the house with
internet access, and the cost of the Apple TV itself, I’m not seeing the
benefit of getting it other than it being another Apple device with
accessibility on it. Am I missing some key point that really makes the Apple
TV superior and a big money saver? If it only could make my normal TV more
accessible and easier to use in watching the programs & stations I enjoy then
I’d be all for it.

Thanks for telling me what you know about it.

Eileen, great questions let me try to help clear things up a little.

Apple TV really isn’t a set top box replacement like your FIOS box. Apple TV
is a box that grabs content from any number of sources (all of which re on the
Internet) and puts them together in a package that’s easy to access. So when
you fire up your Apple TV you will get things like Netflix, Hulu, MLB TV, HBO
and so forth. You pick the app or type of content you want to run and then
choose your programming from there. The new Apple TV will also allow you to
install applications that do other things like possibly shopping or weather and
so forth. So while you can get much of the same content on an Apple TV that
you would on your FIOS box it’s using the Internet instead of the TV portion of
your service. In many cases it’s less expensive to get your content this way.
If the shows you want are on Netflix then it’s $8 per month instead of $100 for
the TV service. More and more content will be available on the Apple TV.
The advantage for a blind user is voiceover is enabled on the Apple TV as an
option. You can hear where in the menus you are, what application you’re on,
all your settings and everything. Imagine if your FIOS box spoke all the menus
and everything, this would be a similar experience. Since your FIOS box
doesn’t to my knowledge this would be your most accessible TV device.

Let me know if that helps or just confused you worse.

Thanks
Scott

  Hi All,

I am very interested in Apple TV, but am not clear on what it will give me
that I might already have. Currently with Verizon FIOS as our provider, we
have enabled the Described Video Service option on the TV/set top box. The
draw back for us with this is that in order to get description, we had to
enable Spanish as the language and we’re not a spanish speaking household. So
if programs are on that would normally be in English, we get them broadcast in
spanish if/when DVS is not offered. And, Verizon doesn’t give a way that we
can change the option without sighted assistance.

So, I’m wondering if we decide to buy an Apple TV, will it give us control
over the set-top box/cable settings? And, will it operate as our standard TV
remote for changing stations, adjusting volume, and switching between DVD/video
player and TV?

Also, will it provide any better access to say tv program listings that are
visually shown on a certain station? Both of us are totally blind so these are
the things that would really make it beneficial if we get one.

And, finally, , will it just work with our current Verizon connections or do
we have to buy additional service to get it working?

I know I’ve asked a lot, but I find it confusing so appreciate any insight
you all can offer.

  Thanks.

  Eileen
