Hello Andrew, The command you are using to try to select text is the command for selecting non-contiguous items. The command you want is VO-Return at the beginning and end of the text you wish to select. You should hear a whooshing sound as you select the text.
You could also try the usual way of selecting text, Shift plus arrow keys.
