You can have Knoppix keep a home directory (with your personal 
preferences and settings, too) on a USB flash memory device; you just 
have to boot with an option to do that; there is a nice book called 
Knoppix Hacks, part of the O'Reilly hacks series, that explains how and 
all sorts of neat tricks, but you can also Google for how to do it.
There is, by the way, a Knoppix-based distro called Quantian, that 
already has LyX and all sorts of mathematical and statistical software 
loaded and ready to go on a Live CD. Check out the latest version of 
that, it may come in handy.
