Just further to the elsart question, the problem with the elsart layout is that it implements a new environment, frontmatter, into which all the the things like \title{}, \thanks{} etc. are meant to go.
What I wasn't able to work out was a way of tying these commands to the frontmatter environment. Ideally, it would nice for the user to able to select "frontmatter" from the pull down list, and then have the commands magically appear, or else, for the the user to select "frontmatter" and then things like "title" and so on appear in the pull down list, or become ungrayed. The other suggestion that I orginally had was that rather than copying the environment descriptions into elsart.layout, I should implement the needed ones by referring to the article layout file. At the moment I haven't implemented that.
