Well, let me add my 2 cents (being a european). I experience that the general 
newsgroup will not hold my attention. After a while i don't check my subscribed groups 
anymore. I think this argument was already mentioned by someone else, who pointed out 
that with a mailing list i keep checking it untill i unsubscribe.. there's no extra 
trouble involved..

Furthermore, I think a newsgroup is much more vulnerable to spam and if there's 
anything i'm not waiting for it's more spam..
