I have't done any programming for years so it will help if your instructions 
are dumbed down a bit. I just took Martin's advice and did a gdb and a bt. 

I am quite happy with slowing down the lyx if it helps. Please let me have 
more specific instructions. Would you like me to compile gdb or something 
else.

regards and welcome. I am most grateful to all of the developers for an 
outstanding product. Its been a great advance over normal latex in terms of 
getting documents out - and enjoying it.
