It depends if you use a recent xforms, which has a built-in image
loader, or an older one (<0.89.6), where lyx does things 'by hand'.

I guess this comes indeed from the xpm library. I use exceed here, and
I can specify a file named rgb.txt which is the so-called 'rgb
database'. It contains a list of color definitions. Presumably you can
do the same.
