Yes, I read that thread. I didn't really see a consensus there and
since it is still a topic on Michael's list I think it should be
discussed again.

\usepackage{geometry} ;-)
Seriously, the problem is IMHO that 95% of all LyX users (me included)
don't really know what the geometry button does in detail. Browse the
archives and you will see that this button causes a /lot/ of confusion.
And users like me tend to click buttons even if they don't know what
they are for.

So we have the following pros and cons:

1. Keep the Button:
PRO:
It is possible to chose the default margins of package geometry
=> This is only interesting for advanced users who know the details of
the package. And they certainly know that they can chose it by
\usepackage{geometry}
or
Custom Paper: 21 cm x 29.7 cm for A4 f.ex.

2. Get rid of it (geometry automatically chosen if there is a value in
margins or custom paper as is now):
PRO:
Save a lot of confusion. People don't click on this button and complain
later. They don't wonder why they can't switch it off when a custom
margin/ papersize is chosen. One more much too esoteric GUI component
has gone.

Of course it depends on your personal taste what is more important. But
from a user's point of view, we should get rid of it /or/ rename it.
We don't have "use a4" or "use a4wide" buttons, do we? Instead we have
"Small Margins" and "Wide Margins". /That/ should be the LyX way. So if
you propose a better name for the geometry button ("Juergen's prefered
margins" ;-), everything is fine. BTW: Since geometry and a4[wide] do
complementary things, we could add a choice for the custom margins of
geometry to "Special".
