This is what I assume too :) All it does is to add the Update::ForceDraw flag to force a full redraw. So it goes through known drawing mechanisms to do its thing.

Having a proper UI for it would be great, but I am procrastinating on that.

What's our policy on preference updates? (I can't remember.) Do we care if a preference file saved with 2.4.1 cannot be used with 2.4.0?

This is a good question. As it is, it will fall back to the default value ("partial" if supported, "backingstore" otherwise) if it does not understand the value that was given (I just checked). The only harm is a warning on the console.
