My motivation for this reasoning, other than to take care of the
conversion from previous versions, is also to assume that if I change
from X11 to Wayland (and vice-versa) we get the best choice available.

I could have an "auto" setting, but that would mean that we let users
shoot themselves in the foot if they select explicitly "partial" on
Wayland or macOS.
Currently, the default is "partial" and then later if "partial" is not
supported, then it is set to "backingstore" instead.
My point is that, if we have an auto setting, then we assume that the
other ones will be accepted as-is. I can do that if you think that it
makes more sense.
This is an issue if I add a GUI: shall we propose the options that will
lead to incorrect drawing?
