Possible ways of translating "outline" are "contorno", "profilo", "abbozzo",
"schema", "schizzo". Conversely, English translation of "indice" would be
"index", and "struttura" would be translated as "structure", "architecture",
"design", or "format".

If you took the time to look at some of the results brought up by the
google search I posted, you surely found a couple of definitions, such as:

http://www.it-project.it/upload/File/Arx_Composizione.pdf
"Il profilo del documento è l'insieme delle informazioni che
caratterizzano il documento."

http://93.57.107.109/consolleavvocato/Manuale%20Consolle%20Avvocato%201.0.1.pdf
"Profilo del documento: insieme di dati che identificano in maniera univoca
il documento, che lo descrivono e raccolgono le informazioni che vengono a
determinarsi nel corso della sua elaborazione"

So, not only the dictionary definition fits the English meaning, but even
the current use in the settings in which LyX is used. IMHO, of course.

They would say "mandami un abbozzo", where "abbozzo" would be the more
appropriate translation for "outline" in this context.
