Well. Your asking the obvious: Since LyX is broken ;-)

The problem is that there are quite a few things missing from the
LyX kernel to make such a thing viable. I don't think it is possible
at all to simulate vi's modes by fiddling with keybindings only.
You probably need some built-in support for that.

On the other hand, LyX is not supposed to be an editor used for
programming. So not having vi keybindings is not _that_ terrible...

This does - of course - not change the fact that I don't what to type
C-M-S-F28 sequences just to enter math mode.
