I guess that means I haven't read the InsetInfo code... :-)

What you were suggesting is to let InsetInfo draw, and produce latex
code by itself. It can certainly be done but some major adjustment to
this inset might be needed.
Right. I think InsetInfo should generate this LateX code directly. The intermediate LyX format is not really necessary.
