Speaking as a user, I also think of storage. It's really a mess to try to
archive a set of files with LaTeX if you need to include figures and other
graphic material. Takes a zip file (with or without subdirectories, as in flat
or full ODF). If you don't have a well structured set of files it is a 
nightmare.

OK. So suppose that LyX was able automatically to put all your files into a well structured set, say, a subdirectory ./filename.lyx.dir, and that it did this transparently. I.e., you can choose as your graphic /path/to/file/pic.png, and LyX copies it for you to ./filename.lyx.dir/graphics/pic.png, and adjust the filename in the inset. And of course LyX would zip this all up for you if you wanted. That help?
