i had the impression bo did most of the flaming himself

but you're are of course right that it is better to prevent situations like 
this.

it would imply though that people might need to sit on large patches for a 
while until others had time to review

that being said. with complicated features like this there is always the 
possibility that one discovers that things were not optimal to start out with.

so in the end it might be better in relatively small projects like lyx to be a 
bit permissive with new features and adjust them when it turns out that this is 
necessary

sure, but note that it is bo's call entirely. no one asked him to leave (i 
certainly didn't), so in the end i don't see how his leaving is a logical 
consequence of changing the embedding scheme apart from him being unable to 
live with compromise.
