Uwe, these are general drawbacks of the external template. I cannot do 
anything about it (unless there's a general combined PDFLaTEX/LaTEX Format 
I've overlooked).

AFAICS we cannot set a default. It's just inserted alphabetically to the 
combo, and the first item is chosen (that's why I added a hint to 
select "PDFLaTeX" in the description window).

It's also available with VTeX that relies on the LaTeX, not the PDFLaTeX 
format, AFAIK.

Also, there's this feature:

"When producing DVI output pdfpages cannot insert pages of a PDF documents.
But instead of interrupting execution pdfpages will insert empty pages.
This feature is important when using packages like pst-pdf, which need to 
produce DVI output at the first run."

So it's not senseless.

You have to export as LaTeX (pdflatex). Maybe View->Source should have a 
toggle to also view pdflatex output.
