FYI, I implemented just that before 1.5.0 and part of the code is still
there commented out. Unfortunately, it was rejected then for the very
same reason as now. I too think this option would be useful. One use
case I can think of besides the other you already cited:
I mainly use LyX in English so I am not really interested in the French
UI. But sometimes my daughter comes to me to teach her to write some
words, so I open a new French instance :-)
No need to say that I'd prefer to just switch the language only of the
current instance. The fact that no other application do that is probably
because they can't. With LyX, we can do it, so why not?
On the technical side, I guess this could also be achieved by setting
the LANG variable internally but the end-result would be the same of course.
