Could/should the LyX installer somehow try to verify that the updating of the MikTeX installation worked? Does the MikTeX installer provide some kind of log output that can be used for this purpose?
Note: I was completely unprepared that I wouldn't be able to build the users' guide. (Although I have to admit that I didn't read the README... guess that's something Windoze users don't do...)
Somewhat related, maybe the installer should warn the user if he is installing LyX without an online connection.
