I have no idea. The only reason I can imagine is that it was implemented by
somebody who did not have a lot of cygwin experience.

Please file a bug nevertheless. They should at least know what other people
think about it. If enough people do that it might get changed.

Under this circumstances I don't have anything against the patch, but the
people to ask are Lars for 1.5 and Jean-Marc for 1.4
