I investigated further the problem and it turned out that the culprit
is qt3 and not boost.

The misunderstanding was caused by the fact that I link lyx against
my own compiled qt library, patched for using native GUI graphics.
I had also applied patches for UNC paths but happily forgot this :(
Instead, Bo links against the official cygwin qt3 which has the bug.

So, problem solved. The boost patch I posted early need not be applied.
This is now a cygwin problem which should be solved by their qt3
maintainer.
