Because that's a waste of time and I don't like #ifdef. The current code is shXXXt (sorry John and Angus ;-)), I cannot fathom why you want to keep that. If I cannot produce anything better than this there's always the possibility to revert to this older version. I really cannot fathom why you are so keen on keeping nice SCM history without actually using it.

See? There can always be counter arguments to your way of thinking...

We're just continuing a nonsense dialog so let's just drop it. I've definitively lost any motivation to do this work anyway.
