They were DOS files, but I did edit out the carriage returns - but as you
said there could be other rubbish in the files aswell. Anyhow it does work
now. I can maybe do a bit of testing with various DOS files and normal
UNIX-style ascii files and see if I can reproduce the problem with another
file - although it was probably just that the author environment was
selected and a TOC was put in it, if LyX allows that as someone pointed
out.
