I think it was (that is the default after all in the LyX I'm running). I
solved the problem by cutting out the whole title (title, author etc.) -
as I think LaTeX was having problems with it for some weird reason - and
writing it back. After that it worked as normal. 

One piece of information that might be important is that the text was
originally inputted by using the ASCII import function (as paragraphs),
and then changing the appropriate paragraphs into sections, title etc. Of
course I would expect this to not generate any errenous code, but I guess
it is possible in the inputting phase that some characters in the input
file were translated into something not suitable for LyX. So the problem
might be in the ASCII import.
