The installation of LyX's own LaTeX packages sound very good to me.
On the other hand, as I said before, I like installation on
/usr/local, particularely since it was packages I build myself, so
I don't considere them really official packages.
I use rpm version 2.5.5, and will be maintaining that even if I
upgrade to 6.0/rpm 3.0 another redhat that run beside the current one
on my box.
I feel comfortable to maintain for a while "old" stuff.
For sure, I agree it would be a good thing to use same lyx.spec file.
