There is no problem -- when I work on LyX, I do this as the first
thing. Then egcs crashed because it can't get the 23 GBs of swap
that is needed to optimize the inlined main. Sheesh! And we
put up with these bad compilers?

Seriously, the advantage of having all translations in one file is
that you don't have to translate the same string many times for each
frontend.
Also, it makes handling of them easier -- now, the different translators
can simple mail a po-file to use, and this is easier than an archive.
I agree with Lgb that it's best to keep this in one file.
