Not that you can't run a Linux VM in 512 MB, but it's probably not
going to be the best experience.

You may want to try booting from an external drive.  For example,
here's a picture of my drive with several different Linux installs:

Of course, that assumes that your laptop can boot from an external USB
storage device.
