Linux Mint's default desktop is GNOME, yes. It is known as Main Edition.
There are three other versions of Mint, called community edition (CE).
Those are KDE, Xfxe and Fluxbox.
There are two other releases, 64bit and Light edition (both are GNOME).

If you are looking for a real lightweight distro, your choice should
be Xfce or Fluxbox. (2nd one is lighter).
