I have YES (sattelite) and just bought a computer for the purpose of building a PVR using MythTV over linux.
I think it is stupid to get the analog output an re-encode it. i preffer to get the digital output directly.
so I preffer to use a Card inside my PC instead of using the STB. is it possible ?
There are two parts to this problem: getting the frames and unencrypting them.
Getting the frames is rather easy -
1. Get a DVB card that works with Linux. I've used Technisat SkyStar2 PCI DVB in the past, but others work too.
2. Grab the linuxtv Linux DVB drivers.
After some manipulation (feeding the right frequency and direction) you start to get the MPEG transport stream off of the satelite.
Here is the problem - all of Yes MPEG transport streams are encrypted. Yes, even those of the channels in the base package. Don't ask me why.
So what you need is an CAM with the right card (the one that Yes gave you) to decrypt the stream. I've heared some unclear rumour that the Yes STB has a propritery CAM by NDS, that is - you can't take the smarty card and put it in a "regular" CAM and expect it to work but I'm not sured I heared right or even undetrstood what I heared.
what if i unsolder the CAM from the STB (just asking)?
You'll lose the deposit you paid Yes? ;-)
If i have to use the STB, then is there a way to get digital video from it with/without opening it ?
Don't know -depends on the STB.
Is there a way of changing it's chunnels not using a remote control ?
Hint: the STB has a RS232 port at the back. You might get lucky.
Hope this helps, Gilad
