Thanks to all those who replied. I still have no solution though I am going to try to set the mtu via the iptable rules. One other thing though which I just don't understand is why I can't ping or telnet to the modem after pppd dies. It takes several minutes and powering off/on the modem does not help. Could this be a network card problem?

Two things strike me: 1)Whenever I have gotten the disconnect I am pretty sure I was using RealAudio to watch a video stream on the linux box. 2)Does the mtu of the NICs need to be set to 1452 (or lower) on the linux box also? One other detail about the streaming video: when the XP is connected through masqing, the same video stream mentioned above comes in too slow to play. Why is the connection rate dropping to the masqed machine?
