I don't know much about the linux/adsl combo but I do know that on a win2k box I have I had the same problem (although I didn't adjust the mtu). I have just recently (last week) converted my Alcatel home to an Alcatel Pro and removed all need for a dialer at all. This connection is much more stable and seems to never disconnect.
