I have been running my adsl connection on my linux box for only a few days. While I had no problems setting up the connection (good work fellows), I am experiencing some random disconnects. The linux machine is masqing for a small network. Only a windows XP machine is being masqed at the moment. The XP machine has the mtu set to 1424 as per recommendations at http://ny-monitor.dslreports.com/tweak/block%3A217f208?service=dsl&speed=150 0&os=winXP&via=normal . I never had problems when connecting directly from the XP machine.
I am using RH 8.0. The adsl ethernet modem is connected at eth0. After the pppd connection dies I can't even ping the modem for several minutes and I need to bring eth0 down and back up with ifconfig. eth0 is ip 10.200.1.1 and eth1 is 192.168.1.1 Here is the message log for the last disconnect (they all look similar). Dec 29 13:09:22 golem pptp[2863]: log[pptp_conn_close:pptp_ctrl.c:307]: Closing PPTP connection Dec 29 13:09:22 golem pptp[2863]: log[call_callback:pptp_callmgr.c:88]: Closing connection Dec 29 13:09:24 golem pppd[2864]: Hangup (SIGHUP) Dec 29 13:09:24 golem pppd[2864]: Modem hangup Dec 29 13:09:24 golem pppd[2864]: Connection terminated. Dec 29 13:09:24 golem pppd[2864]: Connect time 558.1 minutes. Dec 29 13:09:24 golem pppd[2864]: Sent 1835921 bytes, received 130761923 bytes. Dec 29 13:09:25 golem /etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not supported Dec 29 13:09:25 golem pppd[2864]: Exit. Two things strike me: 1)Whenever I have gotten the disconnect I am pretty sure I was using RealAudio to watch a video stream on the linux box. 2)Does the mtu of the NICs need to be set to 1452 (or lower) on the linux box also? One other detail about the streaming video: when the XP is connected through masqing, the same video stream mentioned above comes in too slow to play. Why is the connection rate dropping to the masqed machine?
