What about a faint background? We could have a page of some Schumann song in the background; that would show off beautiful engraving, lyrics, non-ascii lyrics, piano stuff, etc. Instead of black-on-white, it would be faint-gray-on-white, of course. That sounds like a good idea; could you give it a shot? I remember thinking a few years ago that we could probably make something fancy using \markup { \combine ... }, the graphical markup commands, and \musicglyph. It's not something that I'm willing to spend time on, so unless somebody volunteers to try it, this nice idea will die here.
