Hi Brian welcome to the dark side! I wouldn't recommend my distro (gentoo) if you're just starting out with Linux (it's … high-maintenance), so instead I'll give you this advice:
Frescobaldi 3.3.0 has been out for a long time now, which means it's available on pretty much any Linux distro (though, watch out when Frescobaldi 4 comes out, Soon™). For lilypond itself, the Downloads page (https://lilypond.org/download.html) links to a generic package that comes with a pre-built binary. You can unpack that file anywhere on your system and just use that, because Frescobaldi can be set up to use any lilypond executable on your system. I find it much easier to keep Lily up to date that way, since it updates frequently. Just install Frescobaldi through your distro, and then point it at wherever you unpacked Lily, and you should be set. Cheers, N. Andrew Walsh, PhD, D. phil.
