Hi Brian

welcome to the dark side! I wouldn't recommend my distro (gentoo) if you're
just starting out with Linux (it's … high-maintenance), so instead I'll give
you this advice:

Frescobaldi 3.3.0 has been out for a long time now, which means it's available
on pretty much any Linux distro (though, watch out when Frescobaldi 4 comes
out, Soon™). For lilypond itself, the Downloads page
(https://lilypond.org/download.html) links to a generic package that comes with
a pre-built binary. You can unpack that file anywhere on your system and just
use that, because Frescobaldi can be set up to use any lilypond executable on
your system.

I find it much easier to keep Lily up to date that way, since it updates
frequently. Just install Frescobaldi through your distro, and then point it at
wherever you unpacked Lily, and you should be set.

Cheers,
