When I teach Introduction to Music Theory, the first unit I teach is “The 
Elements of Music”.

“Duration” is one of the Elements of Music. (Not coincidentally, it’s also one 
of the Landau/Bogart Viewpoints!)
“Length” is not one of the Elements of Music.
