Problem still persists in 2025.
I'm using more grouping/outlining (and hiding) as opposed to just hiding, but
it's same problem.
I'd consider it a bug, or poor behavior:
I group only because there are too many rows (or cols) of same kind and I need
to hide most of them except a few at start and few at end. 
Then I need to work with them all, with either dragging by fill-handle or
doubleclick on that. 
So it has to auto-fill the hidden ones as well.

Question: can the behaviour be as OP wanted for Grouping ,as opposed to Hiding?
